Guided TripsEach trip is customized for your group and all you need to bring is your own personal gear. There are a number of options available to make your trip an experience that you'll never forget. Some of your options include:
A packtrip is a wonderful way to get away from the pressures of everyday life. Breathtaking sunrises and sunsets and an awesome array of shining starts over a campfire are treasured moments that are imprinted in ones mind forever.
A typical packtrip begins at the trailhead around midmorning. Guests have a chance to get to know their saddle horses while the guides pack up the mules. Then we head up the trail.
Most 3 day and some 4 - 5 day trips are spent at 1 single campsite. This allows great flexibility during layover days for guests to enjoy individual interests such as day rides, fishing nearby lakes or streams, hiking, photography, or just relaxing in camp. On 4 - 7 day trips you may choose to "progress" through the wilderness.
Depending on the terrain of the area, rides vary from 8 - 12 miles per day, usually arriving at camp around 3:00 PM to allow time for setting up camp. Guests normally pitch their own tents to allow the guides time to begin preparing a mouth watering ranch style meal.
We normally alternate a traveling day with a resting day, or two, throughout the trip. We try to plan our routes to allow flexibility in the trip. On occasion change in weather persuade an unscheduled layover day. Outstanding fishing holes have also been known to alter trip schedules.
For the do-it-yourselfer, we offer summer drop camps in the Eagle Cap Wilderness through July and August. We load your camping gear on the mules and give you a horseride in to the location of your choice. We then come back on a designated day to pack you out.
Be
sure to bring all of your personal gear and your
camping supplies such as:

Trip Starting Point:
Steen's home located about 2 miles from Joseph or at the trailhead depending on the trip location chosen. We would like to meet with you the evening before the trip at our ranch for our trip orientation. We want to make sure you have everything you need to assure an enjoyable trip.
Getting to Joseph:
If you are driving, you can reach Joseph by taking Highway 82 off of I-84 in La Grande or by taking Highway 3 from Lewiston, ID. Joseph is 76 miles from La Grande and 80 Miles from Lewiston. We will send you a map of how to get to our ranch. If you will not be driving in to Joseph, we can make arrangements to pick you up at the airport in Lewiston, Walla Walla, Pendleton, or Pasco.
Lodging:
If you need lodging prior to or after the trip, there are motels and campgrounds available. Lodging can be limited and early reservations are needed. We will be glad to make recommendations or help you secure lodging.
Fishing:
Fishing in the high mountain lakes is good for trout. We have good luck with both spin casting and fly rods. In Hells Canyon we can drop to the Snake River to fish for Smallmouth Bass, Rainbow Trout, and Catfish. We suggest spin lures and bottom fishing setups for this.
Weather:
Spring and fall trips in Hells Canyon are pleasant with daytime temperatures ranging from 60 to 90 degrees. In July and August we move the horses to the High mountains where the trips are cooler for them. Day time temperatures range from 60 - 85 degrees with possible frost coming at night.
Campsites:
We camp outdoors on our horse trips. We provide a comfortable camp with high-back chairs and tables to eat at. We provide a 4 man tent for each couple or a 2 man tent for singles for roomy sleeping quarters. We can also provide sleeping bags and ground pads upon request. Our kitchen is setup to prepare BBQ and Dutch even Dinners, hot breakfasts, and desserts that are guaranteed to satisfy a hearty appetite.
